What is a Slot?

A thin opening or groove, especially one for receiving something, as a coin or a letter. A notch or narrow opening in the side of a building, door, etc. A position in a sequence or series: The TV show is slotted at eight o’clock on Thursdays. To place in a slot: He slotted the piece of wood into the groove.

The earliest slot machines were designed by Charles Fey and were much simpler than the Sittman-Pitt invention. Fey’s machine had symbols like diamonds, spades, horseshoes and hearts and paid out credits only when three Liberty Bells lined up. He also allowed players to change machines if they were losing, and added the lever to control reel spins.

Many people think that a machine is due to hit after a long losing streak or that the machines at the ends of the casino are hotter than those in the middle. These beliefs are myths, but they have spawned entire sets of beliefs about when to play and when not to play a machine.

A slot is an identification of information in an utterance that the bot needs to find a solution to the request. A slot can be mapped to a built-in slot type or a custom slot type. For example, the bot can identify slots in a request such as rooms required, number of nights, and tomorrow. These slots can be mapped to the built-in slot types, or the bot can add a custom slot type such as executive rooms for three nights starting tomorrow.
