The Basics of Poker

The game of poker is one of the most popular card games in the world. Almost every country where people play cards has some sort of poker game.

In poker, players put money into a pot before they are dealt any cards. This is known as the ante. They then have the option to call (match) a bet made by another player or to fold. The person who raises the most money during a hand wins the pot.

Each player starts with a specific amount of chips. These are called “poker chips.” Usually, white chips are worth the minimum ante or bet; red chips are worth five whites; and blue chips are worth 10 whites. In addition, some games have special low-denomination chips for drinks and food.

After everyone has their 2 hole cards, a round of betting begins with the player on the left of the dealer. This is the first of several betting rounds.

During the course of a hand, you will see 3 more community cards dealt face up. These are called the flop, turn and river. Using your two personal cards and the 5 community cards, you try to make a high-value hand.

Beginner players often think of a poker hand in terms of its individual ranking, but this is a mistake. Instead, it is better to think in ranges. For example, a high-card pair will beat a lower-ranked pair. This helps you understand the odds of your opponents having certain hands and makes bluffing more effective.
